There is another reason to visit – and perhaps fall in love with – Ronda.
The long-awaited Camino del Desfiladero del Tajo has now fully opened, creating a spectacular walking route through the bottom of Ronda’s famous gorge and offering an entirely new perspective on one of Andalucía’s most recognisable landmarks.
Already being compared to Málaga’s famous Caminito del Rey, the comparison is more than just a convenient nickname. The new walkway was designed by architect Luis Machuca, whose studio was also responsible for the celebrated Caminito del Rey.
Seeing Ronda From Below
Most visitors know Ronda from above.
We stand at the viewpoints, look across the enormous gorge and photograph the magnificent Puente Nuevo spanning the Tajo.
The new Camino del Desfiladero turns that familiar experience on its head.
Instead of simply looking down into the gorge, visitors can now descend from Ronda’s historic centre and experience the Tajo from within, walking beneath the Puente Nuevo and alongside the Guadalevín River.
The completed itinerary extends for almost a kilometre through the gorge.
The first section, opened in 2024, created a route of around 200 metres down to the base of the Puente Nuevo. The newly opened second phase adds approximately 500 metres of walkway beside the river, continuing through the heart of the gorge before eventually emerging near the historic Arab Baths.
The new section officially opened to the public on 16 September 2026.
A Different View of an Icon
For those of us who know Ronda well, perhaps the most exciting part is simply seeing such a familiar landmark from a completely different angle.
From the bottom of the Tajo, the scale of the gorge becomes much more apparent. Towering rock walls rise on either side, while the Puente Nuevo – normally seen from the streets and viewpoints above – suddenly appears high overhead.
The walkway has deliberately been positioned at a relatively low level alongside the river so that it sits quietly within the landscape rather than competing with it.
It is a wonderful combination of nature, architecture, engineering and history – all contained within walking distance of Ronda’s old town.
Andalucía's New Must-Do Experience?
The first section of the Camino del Desfiladero had already become extremely popular before the route was completed, attracting around 150,000 visitors during 2025.
The finished walkway should make it an even more important attraction, encouraging visitors not simply to stop in Ronda for a photograph of the Puente Nuevo, but to stay longer and discover more of the city and the surrounding Serranía.
And that is good news for the entire area.
Ronda may be the best-known destination, but beyond the city lies an extraordinary landscape of mountains, white villages, vineyards, olive groves, cork forests and country estates.
Places such as Gaucín, Benalauría, Genalguacil, Cortes de la Frontera, Jimera de Líbar and Montejaque offer a completely different pace of life, while remaining within easy reach of Ronda.
