Village Life in the Serrania de Ronda
The Santo Niño Festival: One of Gaucín’s Most Beloved Traditions
Every year, between the end of August and the beginning of September, the beautiful white village of Gaucín, Málaga, celebrates one of its oldest and most cherished traditions: the Festival of the Santo Niño and San Juan de Dios.
With almost five centuries of history, these festivities bring together faith, tradition and an extraordinary community spirit. They also offer visitors to Gaucín a unique opportunity to discover a very special part of the village’s identity.
According to local tradition, the story dates back to 1536, when Juan Ciudad — who would later become San Juan de Dios — encountered a barefoot child at La Adelfilla, on the old road to Gaucín. This encounter became an important part of the village’s history and folklore, and the Santo Niño has remained at the heart of life in Gaucín ever since.
30 August – The Pilgrimage to La Adelfilla
This year, the celebrations begin on Sunday 30 August with the traditional Pilgrimage of the Santo Niño and San Juan de Dios to La Adelfilla.
The pilgrimage commemorates the place associated with the Santo Niño’s appearance to San Juan de Dios. The image of the Santo Niño is carried from the castle to La Adelfilla, where a rociera Mass is held, followed by a day of community, celebration and togetherness.
It is one of those days when the traditions of a small Andalusian village come to life: families, friends and different generations gather to keep alive a celebration that has formed part of Gaucín’s history for centuries.
7 September – La Bajada
One of the most moving moments comes on 7 September with “La Bajada”. The images of the Santo Niño and San Juan de Dios are carried from their chapel, located in the spectacular Castillo del Águila, to the parish church of San Sebastián, in the heart of the village.
The streets fill with local residents, families, music and celebration as the images make their way through Gaucín, continuing a tradition passed down from generation to generation.
8 September – The Main Day
The celebrations culminate on 8 September, traditionally regarded as the main day of the festivities, with the principal religious ceremonies and procession through the streets of Gaucín, before the images return to the castle.
For those visiting the Serranía de Ronda, the end of August and beginning of September are a particularly beautiful time to discover Gaucín. It is precisely these traditions — the processions, families gathering in the streets, the music and the close connection between the village, its castle and its history — that make living in Andalusia’s white villages about so much more than simply owning a beautiful home.
